Messy Start To Winter

As winter officially arrives Thursday, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Sarnia-Lambton.

The national weather agency says periods of light snow will arrive Thursday afternoon and become mixed with freezing drizzle after midnight.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says latest indications suggest snowfall amounts of 2 cm or less will accumulate.

"It's going to bring initially some snowfall to the area likely Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening and continuing off and on through the overnight," says Coulson. "We could see some freezing drizzle mixing in on Friday maybe even some rain if the temperatures get warm enough and that messy mix could potentially continue into Saturday as well."

Environment Canada says motorists should expect poor winter travelling conditions Thursday evening and Friday morning as a result, and plan for extra time to reach their destination.

Winter officially arrives at 11:28am Thursday and it will be the shortest day of the year with the fewest hours of daylight.
