Bouncers at Sarnia City Hall?

One Sarnia councillor thinks it wouldn't be a bad idea to have security on hand during the meetings.

Cindy Scholten is bringing forward a notice of motion that she says would enhance the procedural bylaws for council meetings and delegations. It comes after she says a delegation became unruly following a meeting last month.

Scholten says they need to make sure delegations are respectful when speaking to council, and stay on topic.

"They have full right to disagree 100% if they want to call it a bad move or stupid move of council," says Scholten. "It's just when they start naming a council member like if they said councillor Scholten is stupid, or they name a city staff member and called them a name or put them down, that's when they're out of line."

Mayor Mike Bradley agrees the bylaw is always subject to change, but doesn't agree with all the listed suggestions including no signs or placards in council chambers.

"One of the most treasured objects in the Mayor's office in Sarnia is the Charter of Right's and Freedoms signed by Pierre Trudeau personally, and what I'm seeing happening on a continual basis is a denial of the right of the public to speak to their councillors," says Bradley.

Another addition Scholten will like to see in the City of Sarnia Procedural By-Law include the Mayor or chair may request members of the public leave the chamber if their behaviour is disruptive.

Council meets in regular session at 4pm Monday, December 11.
