Legionnaires Come Back Twice, Defeat Maroons 6-4

The Sarnia Legionnaires (15-9-1-2) came back from two goal deficits twice, as they downed the visiting Chatham Maroons (11-12-0-1) 6-4 at the Brock St. Barn Thursday night.

Chatham pulled ahead 2-0 under five minutes into the opening period on goals from Josh King and Cameron Welch 1:11 apart. It was the 16-year-old Welch's first career GOJHL goal.

Legionnaires forward Jon Sanderson cut the lead to 2-1 with a powerplay goal two minutes later. Sanderson buried the rebound on a point shot from Matt Stoia. Zach Vanderwal picked up his first of three assists on the night. Nolan DeGurse tied the game 2-2 before Steven Fowler made it 3-2 Maroons with four seconds left in the opening frame.

Fowler made it 4-2 Chatham with a second period marker. The Legionnaires scored four third period goals to seal the victory. Brock Perry scored twice, including an empty netter with one second remaining, while Joey Zappa and Jon Sanderson added singles. Perry also dished out a pair of helpers for a four point night.

Legionnaires goalie Blair Coffin made 32 saves on 36 shots, while John Massara turned aside 29 of 34 shots in the Chatham net.

The Legionnaires sit fourth in the Western Conference standings with 33 points, six behind the first place London Nationals. Chatham is in sixth place with 23 points.
