High School Teacher Charged With Sexual Assault

A local teacher who allegedly carried on a relationship with one of her students has been arrested.

Sarnia police have charged 49-year-old Barbara Organ with sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

Detective Constable Sam Sulaiman says it's alleged Organ began a relationship with a 16-year-old female student while she was teaching at St. Clair Secondary School, between 2011 and 2013.

He says the relationship carried on after the victim left high school.

"Organ was requested to attend the police station on November 29, which she did, and she was charged with those offences at that time," says Sulaiman. "She was released from custody on bail with her first appearance in court in December, 2017."

Lambton-Kent District School Board  Public Relations Officer Heather Hughes says the high school teacher has been suspended.

"The school board has very clear policies and procedures in place for supporting a safe learning environment for all of our students, and all of our staff members are expected to comply," says Hughes. "I can't speak about any details of this investigation since it is ongoing and we want to be supportive of the police investigation in this regard."

The victim's name will not be released.
