Local Firefighter Receives Provincial Honours

Sarnia firefighter Jim Rose has received the Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery.

Rose was recognized Tuesday at Queens Park for his efforts on the evening of September 2, 2016.

The Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services Marine Unit responded to an overturned boat in Lake Huron about one mile from shore.

Fire officials say a male boater and his dog were seen escaping the sinking boat into a dingy, while in rough waters. Within minutes the dingy capsized, leaving the boater and his dog in the water.

Rose jumped into the choppy waters and placed a floating rescue sling around the victim. After handing the dog's leash to the driver of the personal water craft he was able to swim to shore holding while holding onto the boater.

The man was taken to Bluewater Health and treated for shock and hypothermia, while the dog was taken to the local Humane Society. Both recovered.

Point Edward Fire and Rescue, along with the Canadian and US Coast Guard, also helped in the rescue.

The Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery is awarded annually to firefighters who have gone above and beyond to protect and serve their community.
