Vandals Target Celebration Of Lights

Sarnia's Celebration of Lights displays have already been vandalized, not even 24 hours after volunteers from Alexander MacKenzie High School helped put them up.

Upwards of 70 students and staff erected some displays at Centennial Park on Tuesday, and organizers returned the next day to find the displays smashed and bulbs broken.

Board Member Cathie Blake is saddened and hopes those responsible will be caught.

"It's everybody's duty to watch out for things like that," says Blake. "If you see something going on, just phone the police or take a picture of it, don't just turn a blind eye to it. Everybody in this community has put money toward this event and it's taken out of everybody's pocket. It's just so sad."

Blake says a community set up is still planned for the morning of Saturday, November 18, although she expects a lot of the time will be spent fixing the displays.

Those interested in helping out are asked to meet at the Suncor Agora in Centennial Park at 8am.

Opening ceremonies are set for Saturday, November 25 at 4pm.

The displays, which feature over 600,000 lights will be on every night un January 1. They'll be taken down by volunteers on January 13.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover the cost of repairs to the lights.
