100 Women Who Care

The federal government has awarded a local organization with a Canada 150 Award.

Co-founder of "100 Women Who Care Sarnia-Lambton" Joanne Hines, says she and Lynda Vandenbroek founded the group in 2015 and have now grown to over 100 members.

She says in just nine one-hour meetings they've given over $85,000 to nine local organizations including Sarnia Rebound, Inn of the Good Shepherd, and Habitat for Humanity.

"It's a simple, effective way for women to get together on a quarterly basis and we listen to three charitable organizations in the community tell us what they're about," says Hines. "We decide on which group will be the recipient of the money raised that evening and we each write a $100 cheque."

She says its a huge honour to be given a Canada 150 Award from the federal government.

"They've gone across all the communities across Canada and chosen various charities to receive this award so it's quite a special recognition to even be considered in a short-list, let alone being the organization that's been chosen," says Hines. "So it means a tremendous amount to think all the way up to the federal government level that they recognize Sarnia and our organization."
