Legionnaires Ground First Place Flyers

The Sarnia Legionnaires (10-7-1-2) scored three third period goals en route to a 5-3 victory over the first place Leamington Flyers (14-5-1-1) in GOJHL hockey action Saturday night at the Brock St. Barn.

It was the Legionnaires second win against Leamington in less than a week. Sarnia secured a 5-4 win on Sunday night in Leamington.

Flyers forward Preston Corp's powerplay goal opened the scoring at 6:27 of the first period. Leamington carried a 1-0 lead into the second frame before Brock Perry scored on a 5 on 3 powerplay. Ben Schoch scored just 50 seconds later to give Sarnia a 2-1 advantage. Jaydon Fetter and Griffin Robinson each scored for Leamington to put them ahead 3-2 after two periods.

Sam McCormack and Joel Pavey scored in the third frame, and Ben Schoch potted his second of the contest into the empty net to seal the win.

Jake Vince and Colton O'Brien got into a spirited fight late in the first period. Vince got the better of O'Brien with a few uppercut punches. Each were handed a five minute major and a game misconduct. Vince was also given a gross misconduct for removing O'Brien's helmet and could face a suspension from the league.

Will Barber was solid in net for the Legionnaires, stopping 32 of 35 Leamington shots. Flyers goal Noah Hedrick made 21 saves on 25 Sarnia shots.

The Legionnaires sit tied with LaSalle for fourth place in the Western Conference with 23 points, seven back of Leamington.

Before the game, there was a Remembrance Day ceremony featuring the Sarnia cadets and local veterans.
