Nurse Charged In Hospital Drug Theft

Sarnia police say a nurse at Bluewater Health has been charged in connection with the theft of controlled substances from the hospital.

Police say 32-year-old David Cartwright faces three counts of theft under $5,000, three counts of possession of fentanyl and one count of possession of morphine.

On August 10, police say an anesthetic box containing various medications and narcotics was removed from an operating room floor. On subsequent days, police say additional vials of fentanyl were removed from a medication dispensing machine on the operating room floor.

An investigation was launched by the Vice Unit and Criminal Investigations Branch after Bluewater Health conducted an audit of medication inventory and filed a complaint.

In the early morning hours Wednesday a search warrant was executed at a residence and an arrest was made.

Cartwright has been released on bail and will appear in court at a later date.

The street value of the medication has yet to be determined.

The investigation is ongoing.
