Public Forum On Planned Minimum Wage Hike

The Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce is hosting a town hall meeting on Tuesday evening to gather feedback on Ontario's planned minimum wage hike.

The Liberal government plans to increase the minimum wage to $15/hr by January 1, 2019, up from the current $11.40.

Bill 148 would also impact scheduling, temporary work, vacation time, and unionization.

Chamber President Shirley de Silva says it's a great chance for residents to have their voices heard.

"We want to be able to get feedback from a variety of different sources, and we want an opportunity to discuss the bill," says de Silva. "Our stance so far is that it's a little bit too fast. A minimum wage increase of 32% over 18 months is something we believe will have some negative impacts on our members."

The meeting is being held at the Royal Canadian Legion on Front St. from 5pm until 7pm.

Guest speakers include the chamber's Karl Baldauf, lawyer Susan Houston, and Sarnia and District Labour Council President Jason McMichael.
