Upgraded 402 Station Will Target Unsafe Trucks

$1.2-million is being spent to upgrade the Ministry of Transportation's commercial vehicle inspection station near Wyoming.

MTO West Region Communications Coordinator Liane Fisher says two recessed lanes are being constructed at the eastbound 402 site -- which was built in 2008.

She says the lanes will help officers get under trucks with low clearance to better inspect them.

"The focus of MTO's enforcement program is to remove unsafe commercial vehicles from Ontario's highways and we're committed to facility upgrades to enhance this focus," says Fisher.

Fisher says the contract is expected to take until mid-September to complete and includes concrete and asphalt work, drainage and electrical upgrades.

She says the vehicle inspection facility will be open for regular inspection activities most of that time -- but two closures of up to 7 days each are planned to allow construction.

One eastbound 402 lane is closed for about 1km in the area of the inspection facility.

However, Fisher says it will be open over long weekends throughout the summer.
