Rare B-17 Flying Fortress In Sarnia (VIDEO & GALLERY)

One of only ten B-17Gs in the world that is still flying, is in Sarnia this week.

Local media were treated to a ride over the city in the World War II bomber Monday.

Also aboard "Sentimental Journey" was 92-year-old veteran John Percival of Sarnia, who loved it.

"Oh, great, that was something I'll always remember, I've been flying for a long time, but nothing like that," says Percival. "I've been flying for 55 years, small airplanes, it's the bigness and the four engines and the sound of it. Those fellas that were going over to Germany, they spent, 12, 14 hours in the air, going over there."

Of nearly 13,000 B-17's produced from 1936 to 1945, 8,000 of them were lost in combat.

Huron Flight Centre Owner/Operator Dennis Ryan says the "Sentimental Journey" tour in Sarnia is on through Sunday.

"Thursday we have a 1940's swing dance with full dinner through Pathways, hopefully we'll have people dressing the part," says Ryan. "We have a 23-piece orchestra in from Toronto to play the music and then Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the bomber is doing rides."

Rides are still available for a fee and can be booked at the airport. Information is also available online at www.azcaf.org.

It's free to come out to Huron Flight Centre to see the plane and tours of it are available for $5.

The dinner and dance Thursday at Chris Hadfield Airport is $85 a person with proceeds going to Pathways Health Centre for Children.

On Saturday a barbecue will support the Sarnia-based 44 Squadron Canadian Air Cadets.

Built in 1944, "Sentimental Journey" is part of the Commemorative Air Force, flying out of Arizona.
