School Consolidation Delayed

It's now hoped students will move to the new Great Lakes Secondary School on Murphy Rd. by September 2018.

At this time renovations and upgrades at the former St. Clair Secondary School have not started, but it's hoped work will begin before the end of this school year, according to Gary Girardi, the superintendent of education with the Lambton-Kent District School Board.

Girardi says the process has to go back to trustees before that happens.

"Everything is subject to change especially when you talk about a significant piece of construction and updates, however this is the timeline we have at present," says Girardi.

Designs include construction of an auditorium, a First Nations community room as well as accessibility improvements.

The provincial government allocated capital funding of $10.3-million for the project, while the board will provide $5.7-million for a total investment of $16-million.

It was originally hoped that students will be consolidated at the former St. Clair Secondary School for September 2017.
