Public Input Sought On The Future Of SGH

A public meeting is being held Wednesday to discuss the future of the former Sarnia General Hospital on Mitton St.

The meeting is scheduled for 7pm at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre.

After Wednesday, the future of the former hospital site could become a little more clear.

This is another step toward issuing a new request for proposals be issued for the sale of the Mitton St. property. A brief presentation on the RFP process will be provided followed by an informal discussion to engage the community and receive feedback.

Staff plans to finalize the RFP following the meeting and issue it on or about February 10 with a closing date of May 31.

The last time an RFP was issued for the site was in July 2014.

A development group proposed a $15-million health campus project, but the transaction didn't proceed because, according to a staff report, conditions in the offer weren't met within the time frame agreed upon.

Demolition costs have been estimated to run as high as $9-million, but the province will only fund about $75,000 of that.

The former hospital has been the subject of controversy over the past few months, with thefts and fires at the site.
