Legionnaires Lose To Maroons In Chippy Game

The Sarnia Legionnaires (6-5-0-0) were edged 2-1 by the visiting Chatham Maroons (8-3-0-0) in a chippy GOJHL game Thursday night.

The Legionnaires went up 1-0 midway through the first period on a powerplay goal by defenceman Eric Marsh. Sam McCormack and Joey Zappa picked up the helpers. Chatham's Josh King was handed a five minute major penalty and game misconduct for a high hit on Legionnaires goalie Jorgen Johnson.

Maroons captain Steven Beenackers scored powerplay goals in the second and third periods to put Chatham ahead for good.

The Legionnaires were outshot 45-31, including 20-6 in the second period. Jorgen Johnson made 43 saves including some dazzling glove stops.

Sarnia played most of the game with five defencemen as Derrick Johnson was given five minutes and a game for a hit from behind just two minutes into the contest.

Sarnia went one for five on the powerplay while the Maroons converted twice on nine chances.

The Legionnaires return to action October 20 at home to the St. Marys Lincolns.
