Demolition Of Point Edward's Bridge Tavern Ordered

The owners of the shuttered Bridge Tavern in Pt. Edward have been ordered to tear down the building by August 2.

The restaurant, which closed its doors in early July after nearly 60 years in business, has been declared unfit for human habitation by the property standards officer.

Village CAO Jim Burns says if the owners don't tear down the building, the village will be forced to take action.

"The village would pay the cost to tear it down and then send the owner a bill and if they don't pay the bill then we would put it onto the tax roll," says Burns.

"There is a tax sale process that we would go into, if they owe taxes beyond a certain date then the village can go into a tax sale position."

A tax sale is the forced sale of property for unpaid taxes.

Burns says the owners have until July 29 to appeal the order to demolish the building issued under the property standards bylaw.

Demolition costs are estimated between $75,000 and $100,000 depending on the results of a hazardous materials assessment.
