Anti-Wind Turbine Groups Dismayed By Court Ruling

Two anti-wind turbine groups including one from Plympton-Wyoming say they're dismayed by a decision from the Superior Court of Justice in London that upholds previous Environmental Review Tribunal rulings.

We're Against Industrial Turbines (WAIT) Plympton-Wyoming and a Grey Highlands group had joined forces to appeal tribunal decisions in favour of wind projects in both areas.

The groups appealed based on a Divisional Court ruling in an earlier case that they say compels tribunals to confirm that evidence presented at hearings provides proof that there will be no harm to human health.

They argue that the provincial government has been approving wind projects without definitive scientific evidence that they will not cause harm, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act.

The WAIT group's Santo Giorno expects legal challenges to the Cedar Point project are pretty much exhausted but they're not giving up.

"We're going to be monitoring the Cedar Point project to make sure that it operates in compliance," he says.

"If people have any issues arising from the project we will try to help them out. For future projects, we're going to be look at them very closely as well and ensuring that they are properly designed and all of the safeguards are in place and if we have an issue we will bring them forward again."

Many people living close to wind turbines continue to complain about adverse health effects and project opponents say scientific evidence is growing to support their claims.

WAIT has vehemently opposed the 46-turbine Cedar Point project in Plympton-Wyoming, Lambton Shores and Warwick Township that's jointly owned by Suncor and NextEra.

The project is now up and running.
