Inquest To Examine Death Of Point Edward Firefighter

An inquest will be held into the death of a Point Edward volunteer firefighter who drowned six years ago in the St. Clair River.

Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region, London Office, Dr. Rick Mann says the inquest will examine the events surrounding the deaths of 51-year-old Gary Kendall and 30-year-old Adam Brunt of Bowmanville.

Both men died during firefighter ice rescue training exercises.

Gary Kendall died on January 31, 2010. The subsequent investigation found that while there was rescue equipment in one of the fire trucks parked on shore during the exercise, there was no equipment readily available to pull Kendall ashore.

Brunt died on February 8, 2015 after he became trapped under the ice of the Saugeen River, east of Walkerton.

Dr. Mann says the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

Details regarding the date and location of the inquest have yet to be announced.
