City to Consider Board Ruling on Property Heritage Designation

Sarnia council will consider maintaining or removing a heritage designation at 166 Brock St. S. when it meets Monday.

A recent Conservation Review Board ruling recommends against council's decision last September, to delist the site's heritage designation.

Mayor Mike Bradley says council has the option to honour the board's recommendation, or stick with its original decision.

"This community has not been good at preserving its heritage, and I think this is a good example of where we can take a strong stand," he says noting a heritage designation should not be viewed as a bad thing.

Last fall, the owner of the property said he couldn't keep up with repairs and wanted to sell the property to Vision Nursing and Rest Home.

That deal is no longer an option.

"This was designated for heritage reasons, not for economic reasons, and it shouldn't be removed for economic reasons."
