A Victims of Chemical Valley representative is urging Sarnia council to consider other options for contaminated soil being "entombed" at Centennial Park.
Sandra Kinart has health and safety concerns with a hill of material, containing asbestos, in the back parking lot near the old boat ramps.
In a letter to the city clerk, Kinart says contaminated soil is in eyesight of the Missing Worker Memorial, which serves to honor community members who have lost lives to asbestos.
"I think there's still an opportunity to make changes," says Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley who believes the remediation process has gone on much longer than anyone envisioned.
"[The hill] really raises some questions about the overall remediation," he says. "These are legitimate questions from people who have been directly impacted and lost loved ones from exposure to asbestos."
Bradley says a report to council last July states it would cost $2-million to reuse and relocate approximately 5,500 to 7,700 m3 of heavily impacted/contaminated material on site.
