Sirens Fail During Emergency

St.Clair Township's Mayor says we have to find a way to make sure sirens are more dependable during an emergency.

Steve Arnold says there was some frustration expressed by residents after warning sirens in the community failed to work during an incident last week at Shell.

"We have three sirens within the village of Corunna and the one over at the Legion was the one I think most of the folks were concerned about," says Arnold.

"They did their test on Monday and it was working fine but all of sudden when we needed it on Wednesday it wasn't working, so we went back in and there was a radio signal issue, and we got that one all fixed up."

Arnold says emergency repairs totaling $21,000 were approved for the sirens at the firehall a couple of weeks ago, but they're still waiting for parts.

He says the siren has only four of eight horns working.

Warning sirens were sounded just after 6pm Wednesday after a release at Shell Corunna.

A precautionary shelter in place was in effect for about two hours for part of the community.
