Save SCITS Committee Optimistic About School's Future

The Save SCITS Committee has renewed hope that the Wellington St. school might be spared, now that the Lambton Kent District School Board's Accommodation Review has narrowed down its choices.

The options are to Close SCITS and transfer students to St. Clair High School or close St Clair and amalgamate all students at SCITS.

Committee member Jennifer George says the public may not realize that SCITS is designated a Priority School Initiative by the Education Ministry.

"It receives ministry funding for the community to have access to the school's facility because it is in an area of high need," she says. "Groups can come in and use the auditorium, the gym spaces, and classrooms at a minimum charge or free of charge."

She says 20 groups utilize SCITS for 1,200 hours, generating $50,000 in revenue. Only four groups use St. Clair's facilities, paying $4,000 in fees.

The next ARC committee meeting will be held March 8 with the board scheduled to make a decision in late April.
