Sting Close In On Spitfires

The Sarnia Sting scored two unanswered goals in the third period to nip the Greyhounds 2-1 in Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday night.

Goaltender Brandon Halverson, the game's first star, held the Sting offence at bay through two periods with the home side holding a 1-0 lead on a goal by Zachary Senyshyn, his 33rd of the season.

The Sting pressed the attack in the third, however, and Travis Konecny finally beat Halverson midway through the period to tie the game 1-1.

The winning goal would come off the stick of Jordan Kyrou with about four minutes left. Kyrou darted off the half boards and snapped a high shot over Halverson.

Konecny has scored 12 of his 19 goals with the Sting and has 28 points in 16 games since coming to Sarnia in a trade with Ottawa.

Kyrou now has 14 goals on the season. Troy Lajeunesse, Matt Mistele, Jakob Chychrun and Pavel Zacha all recorded assists in the game that saw Sarnia outshoot the Greyhounds 38-26.

Justin Fazio won his 20th game of the season between the pipes for the Sting.

The fast paced game took just two hours to complete.

With the win, the Sting (29-15-5-2) moves to within two points of the West Division leading Windsor Spitfires.

Sarnia has a busy week with games in Guelph Friday, at home to rival London Saturday and home to Saginaw Monday for a Family Day matinee at 2:05pm.
