Legionnaires Win Battle Of Lambton

The Sarnia Legionnaires snapped a three game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over county-rival Lambton Shores in GOJHL hockey action Thursday night.

With the loss, the Preds have now dropped eight straight games.

The Legionnaires' Brock Perry opened the scoring in the first period on a rebound goal off the stick of Hunter Tyczynski, and Jordan Fogarty scored to make it a 2-0 game in the second period.

Later in the frame, Legionnaires defenceman PJ VanderVaart went after Preds forward Gino Mini after Mini laid out Brendan Shagena with a hit.

VanderVaart was was handed a five minute major for fighting, along with two for instigating and two for being the aggressor. Lambton Shores however was only able to score once with the seven minute powerplay. Ethan Sarfati potted his 17th of the season before the end of the second period.

The Legionnaires pulled away in the third period on goals by Ryan Trottier and Brandon Layman. Matthew Phillip scored for Lambton Shores to make it a 4-2 game and then Layman scored with the empty net to seal Sarnia's 5-2 win.

Lambton Shores scored just once on nine powerplay chances while the Legionnaires went scoreless on three man advantages.

The Legionnaires outshot the Preds 38-27. Shane Battler stopped 25 shots in the victory.

Next up, the Legionnaires travel to St. Marys Friday night while the Preds host St. Thomas on Saturday.
