Sting Record First Win Of Season

Defenceman Jakob Chychrun scored the game winning goal in a shootout as the Sarnia Sting prevailed over visiting Kingston 4-3 Sunday at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.

The Sting's first win of the young OHL season didn't come easy. The Frontenacs battled back in the third period with two goals by Conor McGlynn to erase Sarnia's 3-1 lead after two periods.

Captain Daniel Nikandrov's second goal of the year gave the Sting a one nothing first period lead. Kingston tied the game early in the second on the power play but Troy Lajeunesse's goal on a nice feed by Alex Renaud and Anthony Salinitri's power play marker set up by Patrick White put the home team up by two.

McGlynn's tying goal came with just over two minutes left with defenceman Kevin Spinozzi in the penalty box for hooking and Frontenacs netminder Lucas Peressini pulled for an extra attacker.

The teams traded chances in the new 3 on 3 overtime format and Sarnia had to fend off the Frontenacs on a 4 on 3 power play to make it to the shootout after defenceman Josh Jacobs was sent off for shooting the puck over the glass.

After a shaky start in Friday night's season opening loss to Erie, Justin Fazio was solid in goal for the Sting, making some big saves late to give the team a chance to win. Fazio stopped McGlynn and Spencer Watson in the shootout. Chychrun and Nikita Korostelev scored for the Sting.

Kingston outshot Sarnia 34-30.

The attendance at the Sunday matinee was 2,097.

The Sting (1-1) head out of town for an early northern road swing this week. They are in Barrie Thursday, at North Bay Friday and in Sudbury Sunday afternoon.
