EA Approved For Clean Harbors Landfill Expansion

Ontario's environment and climate change minister has approved the environmental assessment for vertical expansion of Clean Harbors Telfer Rd. landfill.

Ministry spokesperson Kate Jordan says, after extensive review and consultation, minister Glen Murray is satisfied the expansion will be conducted in a manner that is safe for the environment and community.

Jordan says the approval is subject to conditions.

Consultation must continue with residents and Aboriginal communities during construction and operation. The Community Liaison Committee and Good Neighbours Program has to be maintained and monitoring programs updated to reflect additional capacity.

The 50-year-old facility, the only one in Ontario able to accept hazardous waste, will be full by this fall.

The expansion is expected to cost over $10-million, not including actual construction.

It will add up to five million cubic metres of space, extending the operating life of the landfill near Brigden by 25 years.
