Two local residents are on the hunt to find the historical background of every street name within the city.
Tom St. Amand and Randy Evans have been working countless hours since November and have tracked down approximately half of the 750 Sarnia street names so far.
Their research builds off the 1988 book, The Origin of Sarnia Street Names by George Smith.
"[We've searched through] library records, the abstracts, the old microfiche for the Sarnia Observer, we've used the registry office records, all the historical books on Sarnia, the street directory," says Evans, and the list goes on.
St. Amand says one of the interesting stories they've found is from the Clarendon Dr. naming.
"Ron Clarke contacted us and Clarendon was actually built in the 50's but its a combination of Clarence, his dad's name, Edna, his mom's name, Ron and Doug," says St. Amand. "They wanted to emerge all four so the amalgam was Clarendon."
Evans says their goal is to find out who or what the street is named after and to gather a small background on them as well.
There are still a handful of unknown street name histories to go. They're asking for the public's help towards any leads they may have heard stories of.
