Sarnia Water System In Need Of Upgrades

The City of Sarnia may need to invest $43.7-million over the next few years to replace a large chunk of cast iron pipes carrying water within the city.

Stantec Consulting Ltd. outlined Sarnia's Water Distribution Master Plan during a delegation at Monday's council meeting.

Consultant John Tyrrell says Sarnia has over 100,000 meters of built cast iron pipes dating back to the 1970s.

Tyrrell also brought forward the need for autoflushers on a timer system to help keep water moving in city pipes. He says some city pipes have water sitting longer than 72 hours and therefore, are exposed to chlorine for a longer period of time.

Councillors adopted Stantec's study to be used when making improvements to water distribution systems and infrastructure in the future.
