Heavy Rain Forces Closures

Heavy thunderstorms with flooding rains battered Sarnia-Lambton Monday and early Tuesday morning.

Water damage and flooding forced the closure of Rosedale Public School in Sarnia for the day Tuesday.

The elevators at the Seaway Centre apartment/condo complex on Front St. were reportedly not operational because the underground parking lot and elevator shafts were flooded.

Lambton College's main campus closed Tuesday because of power problems due to water damage. Severe thunderstorms with the potential for tornadoes raced across southwestern Ontario Monday night.

48.5 mm of rain (nearly 2 in) was recorded at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport, much of it between midnight and 1am.

An intense line of storms possibly spawned up to five tornadoes across the state of Michigan and there was an unconfirmed report of a tornado south of Goderich.

A tornado watch, issued for Sarnia-Lambton at 10:14pm, lasted until 3am. A severe thunderstorm warning was also in effect until the early morning hours.

Along with torrential rain, the storms produced strong wind gusts and nearly continuous intense lightning.

There were two episodes of potentially severe weather Monday.

The first wave of thunderstorms rolled through the area late in the afternoon on a warm front, bringing heavy rain, wind and lightning.

700 Hydro customers in Plympton-Wyoming had the lights go out with smaller outages reported in the Corunna-Mooretown and Wilkesport areas.

The second wave of storms developed later Monday night and overnight in advance of a corresponding cold front.

There was flooding and heavy ponding on city streets.
