Farmers Need Rain

Lambton farmers are desperate for rain.

Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson says so far this month we've had only 26mm of precipitation, compared to 80mm normally.

April wasn't any better. Coulson says we had 35mm of rain, which is just under half of what we usually get.

Lambton Grain Farmers Chair Kevin Marriott says it's reaching the critical stage because soybeans need moisture to germinate

It's a double whammy for grain producers. They planted soybeans on acreage where winter wheat couldn't be planted last fall because of wet conditions. Marriott estimates this year's wheat acreage will only be about 10 per cent of normal.
