Sarnia's mayor says he's not surprised but still disappointed.
Mike Bradley reacting to news that an environmental assessment report is giving the okay to Ontario Power Generation's plan to bury nuclear material near the shore of Lake Huron.
200,000 cubic metres of dry low-and-intermediate level waste would go into a deep underground bunker at Bruce Nuclear Generating Station near Kincardine. A Joint Review Panel says it's the best way to deal with the material and is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
Bradley, an outspoken opponent of the plan, says he was expecting the report would favour OPG, with conditions. He expects communities, groups and organizations will be more vocal over the next few months with the issue moving from the regulatory process into the political arena.
The federal environment minister now has four months to decide whether to approve or reject the plan.
More than 150 communities on both sides of the border have condemned the initiative with opponents saying the decision will affect the Great Lakes for the next 100,000 years.
