Starting April 15, Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services will start fining people without a carbon monoxide alarm in their home.
Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus says if they get called to your residence and you don't have one installed you could be fined $360.
Carbon Monoxide detectors have been mandatory in all residential homes since October.
Bus says for people who are renting, it is the landlords responsibility to install the CO alarm but the tenants responsibility to make sure it's maintained.
CO detectors are required near all sleeping areas and in service rooms. The alarms can be hardwired, battery-operated or plugged into the wall.
Carbon monoxide is called a silent killer because it is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is slightly less dense than air.
