Vipers Bite Legionnaires, Grab Series Lead

The Sarnia Legionnaires dropped a hard fought 5-4 game against the LaSalle Vipers to open the second round best of seven playoff series.

Daniel Beaudoin opened the scoring for the Vipers just over three minutes into the opening frame. Davis Boyer tied the game 1-1 on the power play seven minutes later, with Cody Trowell and Ryan Trottier picking up assists.

Legionnaires captain Nathan Mater put Sarnia ahead with a second period goal. The Vipers went on to score three goals early in the third period to pull ahead 4-2.

Brandon Layman scored to pull Sarnia to within a goal, but Nathan Veres scored shortly after to put the game out of reach.The Legionnaires' Cameron Clarke scored with 25 seconds left to make it a 5-4 final.

The Legionnaires outshot the Vipers 39-36. Sarnia went two for four on the powerplay while the Vipers were held scoreless on four chances.

Game two of the series is Saturday in LaSalle. with game three scheduled for Sunday night in Sarnia.
