Sting Nets OT Win Over Whalers

The Sarnia Sting scored late in the third and late in overtime in a big 3-2 win over Plymouth at the RBC Centre Friday night.

Pavel Zacha tied the game with a highlight reel goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation and Nikita Korostelev blasted home the game winner on the power play with 17 seconds left in the extra period.

Unlike the 6-3 loss in Plymouth the night before, goals were hard to come by in the back half of the home and home series.

In fact there was no scoring until early in the final period when defenseman Jeff King fired home his first goal of the season on the power play.

Just a couple of minutes later the Sting would take back to back penalties, one for delay of game, and the Whalers would score twice to take a 2-1 lead.

Both Taylor Dupuis and Plymouth's Alex Nedeljkovic were outstanding in goal. The Sting held a decided edge in shots 46-23.

Korostelev was named the game's first star with a goal and an assist. He leads the team in scoring with 48 points including 21 goals in 48 games.

Jordan Kyrou had two assists and is sixth in rookie scoring in the OHL with 31 points in 55 games.

The Sting (26-27-4-3) remains in seventh place in the Western Conference, now eight points ahead of Saginaw and Windsor who both lost Friday. The Spirit and Spitfires both have two games in hand. Plymouth is still in last place but within four points now of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Sarnia has another big game as it tries to secure a playoff berth, in Windsor Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
