Hounds First Period Bite Kills Sting

The Western Conference leading Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds scored four times in the first period en route to a 6-0 shutout of the Sting at the RBC Centre Monday afternoon.

The visitors scored just 36 seconds into the game when a careless icing and lost face-off led to Justin Bailey's wrist shot that burst the water bottle over Taylor Dupuis' shoulder.

Former Sting defenseman Anthony DeAngelo saluted his former home crowd after scoring about three minutes later to make it 2-0. The Sewell, New Jersey native, with his parents on hand, was honoured before the game and presented his familiar number 7 Sting jersey encased in glass.

The Hounds would take a commanding 4-0 lead into the first intermission on goals by Jared McCann and Keigan Goetz and Justin Fazio would replace Dupuis in goal for the Sting to start the second.

Sarnia clearly outplayed the Soo in the middle frame but had no puck luck around goaltender Brandon Halverson. The Traverse City Michigan native recorded his fourth shutout and 30th win of the season and was named the game's first star.

Shots on goal narrowly favoured Sault Ste. Marie 34-30.

Michael Bunting scored with just eight seconds left in the second and added another in the third to round out the scoring.

Overage Sting forward Stephen Pierog played in his 250th OHL game before a Family Day crowd of nearly 3,800.

DeAngelo now has 64 points including 15 goals in 44 games to lead the league in scoring by defensemen.

Sarnia (25-23-4-3) remains tied with Owen Sound for seventh in the conference but the Attack has three games in hand.

The Sting hosts Owen Sound Friday, is at Plymouth Saturday and back home to the London Knights Sunday.
