Updated - Vessels Freed From Ice, For Now

While ship traffic is moving again through the St. Clair River, Environment Canada isn't sure how long it will last.

Ice Specialist Denis Lambert at the Canadian Coast Guard's Regional Operations Centre in Montreal says the return to very cold weather does not bode well.

He says Lake Huron is still mainly open water and just making ice which will flow into the river. Lambert says Tuesdays drop in temperatures will speed up that process, creating more brash ice for ships to navigate through.

Five freighters became stuck in lower St. Clair River ice near Port Lambton Sunday.

Canadian and US Coast Guard ice breakers freed the ships.

The ice breakers' Griffon and Samuel Risley and the U.S. Neah Bay continue to provide assistance along the route.

Service at the Walpole-Algonac and Bluewater Ferries remains suspended because of the ice.
