Sting Calms Storm

The Sarnia Sting reached the 20 win mark with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Guelph Storm Saturday night.

Sarnia opened up a 3-1 first period lead on two goals by Davis Brown and one by Daniel Nikandrov despite being outshot 17-9.

Justin Fazio got the start in goal and was named the game's third star stopping 36 of 39 shots.

Justin Nichols was pulled from the Guelph net after the Sting's third goal in favour of Bradley Van Schubert who made 23 saves on 25 shots.

The teams traded goals in each of the second and third periods.

Noah Bushnell extended Sarnia's lead to 4-1 but the Storm got a late power play goal from second star Tyler Bertuzzi to make it 4-2 after 40 minutes.

The 2,700 Sting faithful at the RBC Centre were a little nervous after Guelph pulled to within a goal midway through the third but rookie defenseman and newly appointed Alternate Captain Jakob Chychrun scored just 30 seconds later on another impressive individual effort to restore the two goal cushion.

Sting Head Coach Trevor Letowski commented on bestowing the "A" upon the 16-year old blueliner.

Chychrun now has 16 points including eight goals in 19 games.

Nikandrov now has 11 goals and 32 points, just four behind the team lead still held by the injured Nikita Korostelev.

Overage forward and former Guelph Storm Stephen Pierog was also named an Alternate Captain following Anthony DeAngelo's trade to Sault Ste. Marie.

Despite the win Letowski wasn't content with his team's effort.
