Site For Detox Centre Proposed

A proposed site for a detox centre is included in development plans unveiled for the old Sarnia General Hospital.

Plans call for a 10,000 sq ft addition to the former health unit building on George St. to house an around-the-clock Bluewater Health residential withdrawal management facility.

Mayor Mike Bradley feels it's a good location and wants to see the long planned project proceed.

He says the Judith and Norman Alix Foundation has donated $1-million and Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network operating funding has been committed so it's time for the project to move forward.

The detox facility is part of a "Sarnia General Health Campus" development put forward by five area businessmen.

The development calls for more than half the Mitton St. hospital structure to be torn down and 130,000 sq ft of office space created along with 50 additional parking spaces.

Several inspections and rezonings are required as well as provincial approval before the estimated $15-million project can proceed.

The proposal is conditional until March 18.
