Autumn Snow Streamers Surprise Motorists

Autumn lake effect snow streamers created slippery roads, poor to nil visibility and sent vehicles sliding into ditches Friday morning in north and east Lambton.

A two-vehicle crash closed eastbound Hwy. 402 between Kerwood Rd. and Centre Rd. for about three hours. Just after 9am, a westbound van struck a transport truck it was attempting to pass, causing both vehicles to crash into the grassy median. The eastbound lanes had to be closed to remove the van, the transport and its load of soybeans.

The 50-year-old female driver of the van has been charged with careless driving. The truck driver was a 42-year-old man from Southwold. Neither driver was hurt.

OPP also reported a single-vehicle rollover on westbound Hwy. 402 just east of Arkona Rd. No injuries were reported.

Police, fire and EMS responded to a single-vehicle crash with injuries on Nauvoo Rd. between Egremont Rd. and Brick Yard Line.

Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving to changing weather conditions.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement around 10am.

The weather agency says streamers in the flow off lake huron dumped a few centimeters of snow especially inland from just south of the Pinery towards Strathroy and extending across Hwy. 401 near Dutton. Driving conditions were potentially hazardous due to near freezing surface temperatures and accumulating snow on untreated surfaces.

The snow bands were expected to shift and become more isolated but continue off an on Friday.
