Thirty elective surgeries have been rescheduled after a chiller failed at Bluewater Health’s Norman St. site Tuesday afternoon.

A valve in one of the two units responsible for controlling the temperature at the hospital malfunctioned, flooding four patient rooms and the operating rooms.

In a news release this afternoon, the hospital says surgeries scheduled into Thursday have been impacted.

Surgeons are prioritizing cases and contacting patients directly. The hospital says some surgeries will be performed as early as Friday, with others being accommodated during extended operating room hours as soon as next week.

Bluewater Health said Tuesday emergency surgeries would be accommodated temporarily at other hospitals.

Temperatures have returned to normal throughout the building.

The hospital says no major medical equipment or technology was damaged, but supplies that are no longer sterile are being replaced.

Cleaning and sterilization continues in effective areas.

Temperatures reached 31 C Tuesday afternoon with humidex values of 40 C when the equipment failed.
