Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor has congratulated the City of Sarnia on receiving its first Blue Flag award for Canatara Park Beach.

In a tweet this morning, which included the story we posted yesterday at, David Onley applauded the city for its work to make the beach more accessible.

For the past several years, 150 ft of wheelchair and walker-friendly material has been installed at the beach.

The matting is made of very heavy plastic used originally by the military for planes which had overshot the runway.

Canatara Park also has a beach wheel-chair available for residents to use.

The Blue Flag designation recognizes beaches that have achieved international standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety and services.

Grand Bend Beach, the Grand Bend Marina and Pt. Franks Marina have also received Blue Flags.
