Financial Assistance For Beekeepers

The Ontario Beekeepers Association is welcoming a financial assistance program announced for beekeepers.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced Wednesday it would provide beekeepers with ten or more hives, and $105 per hive if they lose 40 per cent of their colonies between January 1 and October 31 of this year.

President Dan Davidson says while it won’t cover the complete loss, at least the government is recognizing there is a problem.

Beekeepers are asked to contact Agricorp for more information.

The OBA has been asking the province to ban a particular pesticide, used to treat corn and soybean seeds, which Health Canada says impacts bees and other pollinators.
