Enhancing 911 Service In Sarnia
Work is underway with Bell Canada to enhance 911 service in Sarnia.
The enhancement will allow Sarnia police to pinpoint the location of people calling from cell phones.
Chief Phil Nelson welcomes the new technology and says times have changed with more people opting away from having a land line .
Eventual upgrades will also include the ability for deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired residents to text 911.
City council recently approved just over $135,000 to pay for new software, support service and hardware for the upgrade.
In March 2013, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunication Commission passed a law directing all wireless carriers and 911 service providers to make changes to support enhanced 911.
