Former Fire Chief Tops Sunshine List

Former Sarnia Fire Chief Pat Cayen tops the city’s 2013 Sunshine list despite being relieved of his duties in January of 2013.

Cayen was paid $185,653.90. When asked why, City Manager Margaret Misek-Evans said accrued vacation time and other payouts owed to an employee when they leave the workplace were factored in.

The 55-year-old remains before the courts on sex related charges.

138 city employees were paid over a $100,000 last year, up from 117 employees in 2012.

Deputy Fire Chief Bryan VanGaver made nearly $175,000. He was followed by Sarnia Police Chief Phil Nelson at nearly $160,000 and Deputy Police Chief Bob Farlow at $155,0000.

City Solicitor/Clerk Brian Knott brought home $147,000, Sarnia’s Finance Director Brian McKay made $137,000 and former City Manager Lloyd Fennell was paid $133,000.

With overtime being a factor, 63 police officers account for nearly half the list, along with 43 fire officers.

Legislation requires the annual reporting of public salaries of $100,000 or more.
