Letowski Named U18 Assistant Coach
Sarnia Sting head coach Trevor Letowski has been named an assistant coach of the Canadian men’s under-18 hockey team for this spring’s world championship in Finland.
Letowski says it was a pleasant surprise to be called by Hockey Canada a couple of days ago.
Letowski says he’s looking forward to becoming involved in Hockey Canada’s coaching ranks after playing for the country twice in international competition. The 36-year-old Thunder Bay native won a gold medal at the 1997 world junior championship and finished fourth at the men’s world championship in 2000.
Letowski says the under-18 team will be chosen from CHL players that have missed the playoffs or are eliminated in the first or possibly second rounds.
The 2014 IIHF U18 tournament will be played April 17-27 in Lappeenranta and Imatra, Finland.
Gord Murphy, a former assistant coach with the Florida Panthers and father of former Sting Connor Murphy was also named as an assistant to head coach Kevin Dineen.
Dineen coached Canada’s National Women’s Team to a gold medal at the winter olympics in Sochi, Russia.
