Patriots punch through Barons in Game 1 of Pollock Division Final

The Mount Forest Patriots did not show any wear and tear in Game 1 of the PJHL's Pollock Division Final.

After a hard-hitting seven-game series against the Wingham Ironmen in the semi-finals, the Patriots carried the momentum into opening night of the finals against Hanover and won 8-0.

A line juggle by the Patriots paid off as Elijah Brahaney was moved from the first line to centre the second line that included Jordan Leitch and Ben Tenhag. That combination opened up the scoring at the 12:15 mark of the first period with Brahaney scoring his third of the playoffs.

And there was a quick follow up as Matthew Weiler scored just 31 seconds later to increase the lead to 2-0.

Weiler would score his second of the game on the power play with just three minutes left in the period and the Patriots took a 3-0 lead into the intermission.

The Hanover Barons tried to push back in the second period, but none of their 14 shots got past Vance Meyer, who stopped a total of 29 shots for the eventual shutout.

The Patriots went on to score twice more in the second which ended the night for Hanover goalie Riley McCabe. And then the Patriots tacked on three more goals in the third.

Mount Forest forward Weiler had a four point night and Brahaney and Brody Leblanc each recorded a three point effort.

The Hanover Barons, who played their first game since clinching a win in the semi-finals last Friday, did have some opportunities but were 0 for 4 on the power play and are looking to regroup for Game 2.

Just over 900 fans attended the opening game.

Game 2 is Friday night with the opening face-off scheduled for 8 p.m. at the P & H Centre, and CKNX AM 920 will have the call for you with Steve Sabourin and John Kollias.

In other PJHL division finals action, Alliston beat Stayner 3-2, Wellesley shutout New Hamburg 3-0 and Mount Brydges edged Thamesford 3-2.
