Snowcross returns to the region

Professional snowmobile racing is returning to Sauble Speedway.

The Canadian Snowcross Racing Association has announced that the speedway will host its season opening weekend from January 7th-9th, 2022.

Speedway General Manager Joe Chisholm says snowcross racing used to be huge in both Bruce and Grey counties, but a run of mild winters in the late 1990's and early 2000's, as well as the contruction of the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre in Owen Sound, brought a halt to an event Chisholm describes as "exciting and action-packed".

Chisholm says the speedway is prepared to meet the needs of those attending the event, which he says will feature a huge amount of parking to account for what is expected to be a bumper crowd as the racing season kicks off, but admits they'll be at the mercy of the snow for determining the success of the return of snowcross racing to the region.

Chisholm is expecting "around 250 teams for that weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised, with the border opening up, if we see some American teams as well".
