Winterhawks to honour former Port Elgin Jr. C team

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks are planning to honour some local hockey history.

The team will pay homage to the Port Elgin Bears Jr. C team, and Winterhawks President Gord Lamont says the team will honour the Bears in a special way.

"They won the league and that was 40 years ago. So we're going to honour them this year at a Winterhawk game with some third jerseys in our game against Elora and we'll have the old Bears jerseys."

The game will be December 28th at home against Elora. Tickets will be available at the door. The Port Elgin Bears competed in the Central Jr. C Hockey League and later Grey-Bruce Jr. C Hockey League from 1976 until 1989, winning the 1979-80 Central championship. Lamont says they'll auction the jerseys off to support a great local cause.

"One of our players is on the police force in Saugeen Shores and he works with the kids in town on drug awareness and that sort of thing, so we're going to work with him on that."

Lamont says many people in town still fondly remember the Bears, who actually produced some NHL talent.

"We did have a few Bears that went on to some fairly prominent hockey and one of them actually played on that championship team from 40 years ago, and that was Paul MacDermid."

The Bears also had had NHLer Louis DeBrusk in the organization for part of a season, as well.
