Sugar Kings sneak by Listowel, Warriors and Siskins win

In one of the rare occasions this season the Listowel Cyclones could not score on the power play and lost 3-2 in Elmira.

Going into the game, Listowel's power play was second best in the GOJHL and clicking along at over 26%. The team had ample opportunity to score with the man advantage in the third period as the Sugar Kings took four consecutive penalties. But it was Elmira that ended up scoring two goals in that span.

Fergus native Jacob Black notched both, one at the 12:13 mark and the second one at 13;59, to give Elmira the lead and the win. That scoring rush gives him five goals in just the nine games he's appeared in since being picked up by the Sugar Kings. Harrison Toms scored the other goal for Elmira.

Listowel ended the night 0-7 on the power play. The Cyclones' goal scorers were Chayse Herrfort (33), 36 sec into the first period, and Steven Grant (9) in the second period.

It continues to be a tight race at the top of the GOJHL Midwest. Listowel sits third with 53 points, two back of Waterloo with 55 points and Stratford is sandwiched in between with 54 points. Elmira has 44 points and is in fourth.

The Cyclones will host Cambridge on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then travel to Kitchener for a late Sunday afternoon game at 4:30 p.m.

Stratford 3 Brampton 2

All of the scoring came in the second period as the Warriors took the lead on a pair of goals scored by Sean Ross to open the scoring.

Brampton responded with two of their own including a short handed effort.

Stratford would notch one late as Drew Ferris scored the eventual winner with just under two minutes to play in the second period.

The Warrios host Waterloo on Friday at 7:30 p.m. then travel to Brantford on Sunday.

Waterloo 4 Kitchener 3 (OT)

A late gamble by the Waterloo Siskins paid off.

The team pulled their goalie and Alex Lycett scored with the extra attacker with just over two minutes to play in the third period to tie the game.

Sam Spaedt would score the winner at the 2:32 mark of overtime.

The win gives Waterloo sole possession of first place place but have played two more games than both Stratford and Listowel, 38 compared to 36.

Waterloo is in Stratford on Friday then hosts Elmira on Sunday.

The Kitchener loss leaves the Dutchmen one point behind Elmira. Kitchener travels to Brampton on Friday then hosts Listowel on Sunday.

Brantford 8 Cambridge 5

A slug fest in Brantford as both teams went back and forth.

It was 4-3 Brantford after two periods before the flood gates opened in the third.

Brantford scored four times in the third period including a power play goal and empty net goal.

The win keeps the 99ers well ahead of Brampton in the standings and closes the gap with Cambridge with the Redhawks up by just seven points.
