Listowel's Corey Conners was able to sink three birdies in his first round at the Desert Classic in La Quinta, California but a bogey on the 9th hole and one on the 18th kept him down the list.
He finished the first round at 1-under-71 and is currently tied for 91st.
All three of Conners' birdies came on par-5 holes while he had trouble on two par-4 holes. He shot par on the rest of the course.
The leader is Phil Mickelson, who shot a blistering 12-under-60.
He sunk 10 birdies and made eagle on a par-5 at the 6th hole and has a three shot lead over fellow American Adam Long.
Adam Hadwin is the top Canadian in the field at at 7-under-65.
